Modern positivity culture suggests we turn away from the darkness in our minds and focus only on the good things. My own experience with grief is that you can’t diminish pain by suppressing or ignoring it. However, you can expand your life to make more space for love by making new memories. Pain might not go away but it can feel relatively small in comparison to an ever expanding heart.
Exploring the dark places by leaning into pain is a surprisingly cathartic experience. These paintings are an invitation to step into the darkness while remaining curious about what might happen when we do.
